Lamp Of The Universe is a solo project from Datura bassist and vocalist Craig Williamson. What a surprise! For those of you who don't know them, Datura are a heavy Stoner rock band, while Lamp Of The Universe is a gorgeously lulling cosmic trip into a paisley colored psychedelic land of celestial ragas from Williamson's guitars, sitar, synths, and tablas. We're talking track titles like "Lotus Of A Thousand Petals" and "Tantra Asana". Believe me, these describe the music on The Cosmic Union perfectly. Lightly strumming acoustic guitars and sitars drift throughout as the tablas and other percussion keep a simple but effective psychedelic pace. Williamson's vocals are equally light and drifting making for the perfect marriage with his music. Lots of beautifully meandering jams that will open your mind for exploring the alternate realms that you travel with Williamson to. There are aggressive moments too, particularly on "In The Mystic Light" which sounds like a jam off Amon Düül's Yeti album. And love that organ and shimmering guitar on "Freedom In Your Mind". HIGHLY recommended to fans of deep space flower power psychedelia.

Probably *the* best album I've heard in recent times is Lamp Of The Universe's "The Cosmic Union". Unlike many others who go for heavy one chord jamming, Craig Williamson has chosen a different path. The music is lush and light, with sitars, occasional fuzz, tablas and organ, but the music has an amotional weight which makes it rich and textured. There's always something more to "The Cosmic Union", always another door to open. The music is free, not unlike S.T. Mikael's best moments. It's loving and simply brilliant music! Craig Williamson (aka Lamp Of The Universe), from New Zealand plays the kind of music you might imagine hearing while laying on your back in some far away garden. Each song has it's own distinct, trippy vibe, but they all flow together with amazing ease. Featuring a strong melody sung in Williamson's typically blissed out, smiling voice, some of the deepest wah-wahed guitar I've ever heard, coupled with waves of trippy organ and a graceful, fluid rhythm pounded out on the skins. Combine it with swirling, bubbling liquid synth effects and tambourine psychedelic, bluesy guitar swirls around mystical piano, trancey drumming, and spacey effects in a dazzling, cosmically mellow jam that will have you floating away on gentle waves into the starry night. Lay back, and let your mind and soul wander. Totally cosmic!

This is the bands 2nd release in 2008. Soon after this the band released a split 7" on a Japanese label with Angel of Damnation but I have not been able to find where outside Japan to get it so, I cant review that track (and it is not at myspace). Anyway, the band has now expanded into a five piece and while the other album was mostly instrumental, this one is mostly vocal. There are 9 tracks in 31 minutes. The album is a mixture of short acoustic tracks (Foresta Esmeralda), garage rockers like Cancion para Nuada, and Desierto Roja, which reminds me of Abramis Brama. Sol Poniente is a longer track and more spacey psychedelic rock before the ending track, Adios Afallenau, is a short
instrumental blues number.

associates made an attempt
to rethink the legacy of the primal days of the band. This LP contains their
very first EP 'Return To The Reptiles',
but with one track remixed, two re-recorded and two more remastered. Also
included are four acoustic pieces and
psychedelic soundscapes which were composed and recorded during the period
2013-2016.
